A German MP has caused a storm of protest by linking Jews to execution squads in the Russian Revolution.
CONSERVATIVE Martin Hohmann said a large numbers of Jews were active in execution squads and could therefore be described as a nation of perpetrators.
David Irving comments:
"NATION" or "race", the translation of Volk is immaterial. In the witness box I recall Richard "Skunky" Evans suggesting that the only possible translation-root for the adjective völkisch was "race". I pointed out that this would then present Europe with millions of "racial cars", Hitler's familiar Beetle.
It is interesting that several days passed before the organised Jewish community sprang into action against Martin Hohmann, suggested that anxious high-level debate has ensued as to whether it is in fact desirable to open this particular can of worms, just when everything is going so well on the money shakedown front.
I recall that in the early 1990s the German minister of the interior (Zimmermann? I forget), forced by Michael Friedmann's late predecessor Ignatz Bubis to go on the obligatory no-questions-permitted tour of Auschwitz, remarked to one journalist, inquisitive about the reasons for his impatience: "Ich nehme an, Sie haben wenig Umgang mit dem Internationalen Judentum." -- I take it, you've not had much experience of dealing with International Jewry.
This gauche, chuckle-inducing remark led to instant uproar in the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
THE trouble with Hohmann is that he has a habit of stating the bloody obvious.
The role of the Jews as the chief executioners and torturers of every Bolshevik regime since 1917 is the Elephant in the Sitting Room that few historians dare remark upon. Just see the uproar in this week's Budapest newspapers about the publication of my book Uprising in Hungarian, with its statement of the obvious about the regime, and its AVO secret police!
Yajov Sverdlov and his entire gang of executioners who bloodily shot to death Tsar Nicholas and his entire family down to the last child (except apparently Anastasia) were Jews: another fact the history books prefer to leave unremarked.
Even Winston Churchill, who famously stated the obvious in a 1920 article in London, later decided his bread was more richly buttered on the other side, and he never regretted his change of line.
As for the historical truth, Heinrich Himmler's chief statistician, the famous Dr Richard Korherr, used pre-Nazi era studies to carry out an investigation of the crucial statistical question, the disproportionately high (250% greater) number of Jews in the Bolshevik regime at every level. His speech triggered an angry response from the Jewish community and members of his CDU party, with some calling for him to stand down.
The Christian Democrats have faced  allegations in the past about members having links to the extreme right.
Mr Hohmann's comments were made during a speech nearly a month ago, but have only surfaced now.
'Perpetrators'
He compared the killings, which he said were orchestrated by Jews in Russia's violent 1917 revolution, with the murder of Europe's Jews during the Holocaust of the Second World War.
According to a transcript of his speech shown on the website of his local CDU branch in Neuhof, Mr Hohmann said: "Jews were active in great numbers in the leadership as well as in the Cheka (Soviet secret police) firing squads.
"Thus one could describe Jews with some justification as a Taetervolk (a race of perpetrators).
"That may sound horrible. But it would follow the same logic with which one describes the Germans as a race of perpetrators."
The speech has since been taken off the site.
The BBC's Ray Furlong in Berlin says Mr Hohmann has now gone further in defending his remarks on national television.
He said the MP demanded "justice" for Germans and that they should not define themselves as the nation who caused Auschwitz.
Taboo
The head of Germany's Jewish community, Paul Spiegel, (above right, with Chancellor Schröder), called Mr Hohmann's speech "a reach into the lowest drawer of disgusting anti-Semitism".
He said he had spoken to CDU leader Angela Merkel and assured reporters "she shared my views".
Our correspondent says any criticism of Jewish people is still a taboo in Germany, which makes this extremely embarrassing for Mr Hohmann's party.
The CDU's secretary-general, Laurenz Meyer, said he had urged Mr Hohmann to apologise as quickly as possible, but refused to comment on whether he would be forced to give up his seat.
Dieter Wiefelspuetz, a senior parliamentarian for Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder's Social Democrats, took a harder line.
"There is no place for anti-Semites in the German parliament," he said.

CDU-Abgeordneter nennt Juden «Tätervolk»
Frankfurt/Main (dpa) - Der hessische CDU-Bundestagsabgeordnete Martin Hohmann hat nach einem Bericht des Hessischen Rundfunks in einer Rede den Holocaust verharmlost und Juden zugleich als Tätervolk bezeichnet. Hohmann habe bei seiner Rede zum Tag der Deutschen Einheit am 3. Oktober in seinem Heimatort Neuhof bei Fulda gesagt, vor allem jüdisch-stämmige Bolschewisten seien für die Verbrechen während der kommunistischen Revolution in Russland verantwortlich.
«Juden waren in großer Anzahl sowohl in der Führungsebene als auch bei den Tscheka-Erschießungskommandos aktiv. Daher könnte man Juden mit einiger Berechtigung als Tätervolk bezeichnen», zitiert das hessen-Fernsehen Hohmann weiter.
In dem am Donnerstag gesendeten Beitrag sagte Dieter Graumann von der jüdischen Gemeinde in Frankfurt, er sei angewidert. «Der Antisemitismus in Deutschland ist über die Stammtische gewandert und im Deutschen Bundestag angekommen.»
Die hessische SPD forderte den Ausschluss Hohmanns aus der CDU-Bundestagsfraktion. CDU-Generalsekretär Laurenz Meyer kündigte in der Sendung an, die Partei werde mit Hohmann reden.
Die Hessen-CDU distanzierte sich von Hohmanns Äußerungen. «Diese Haltung und Sprache Hohmanns ist nicht die unsrige», erklärte der Generalsekretär des Landesverbandes, Michael Boddenberg, in Wiesbaden. Zudem forderte er Hohmann auf, «derart unhistorische, falsche und unakzeptable Äußerungen zu unterlassen».
Nach Angaben des hessischen Rundfunks hatte der CDU-Verband Neuhof die Rede auf seiner Internet-Seite veröffentlicht. Am Donnerstagabend war sie dort nicht mehr zu finden. -- dpa
