Lodges situated East and West
All lodges are, or ought to be, situated due east and west, because King Solomon's Temple was so situated. To perpetuate the remembrance of that remarkable east wind which wrought their mighty deliverance, and likewise the better to receive the rays of the rising sun. As this tabernacle was a model for King Solomon's Temple, so ought all lodges to be situated due east and west.

The Point with a Circle
Upon the top of the circle rests the Book of Holy Scriptures. The point represents an individual Brother, the circle, the boundary line of his duty. In going around this circle, we necessarily touch on the two parallel lines, as well as on the Book of Holy Scriptures; and while a Mason keeps himself circumscribed within their precepts, it is impossible that he should materially err. The parallel lines represent; the two Saints John, the winter and summer solstices, as well as Wisdom and Strength.

The first three steps represent the first three degrees of Masonry and the three principle officers of the lodge
The SQUARE, symbolizes the Worshipful Master, and denotes proficiency as a Master Mason. It further alludes to Wisdom (to Contrive).
The LEVEL, symbolizes the Senior Warden, and denotes his oversight of the Fellow Crafts. It further alludes to Strength (to Support).
The PLUMB, symbolizes the Junior Warden, and denotes his oversight of the Entered Apprentice. If further alludes to Beauty (to Adorn).
The Five steps represents the five orders of Architecture; Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian, and Composite. They also allude to the five human senses; hearing, seeing, feeling smelling, tasting.
All are essential for a well founded quality of life, but the three most revered by Masons are Hearing, Seeing, and Feeling. By the sense of Hearing, we distinguish the Word; by that sense of Seeing, we perceive the Sign; and by that sense of Feeling, we receive the Grip, “whereby one Mason may know another in the dark, as well as in the Light.
The Seven steps alludes to the seven liberal Art and Sciences
Grammar
Rhetoric
Logic
Arithmetic
Geometry - The fifth and noblest science; teaches of the powers and properties of magnitudes in general.
Music
Astronomy
The letter “G” is universally displayed over the Worshipful Masters Chair. It is the initial of Geometry. Geometry is the fifth and noblest of the sciences. It is the base on which the superstructure of Masonry is erected.
By Geometry, we may curiously trace nature through her various windings, to her most concealed recesses. By it, we discover the power, wisdom and goodness of the Grand Architect of the Universe, and view with delight, the proportions which connect this vast machine.
The letter “G” also alludes to the sacred name of the Deity. Whom, we shall all, from the youngest Entered Apprentice (in the Northwest corner) to the Worshipful Master, who presides in the East, with reference, most humbly bow.
Jewels of a Fellow Craft
The attentive ear receives the sounds of the instructive tongue, and the secrets of Masonry are safely locked in the repository of the faithful breast. |
